Mother, son beaten with baseball bat were newcomers to Winnipeg, police say

A mother and her teenage son were allegedly assaulted with a baseball bat after refusing to give two suspects money earlier this month, according to Winnipeg police.

Police say the woman in her 30s and her 14-year-old son are newcomers to Winnipeg. Both victims were taken to hospital, where the teenager remains in serious but now stable condition.

Two suspects have been arrested.

The Winnipeg Police Service says officers were called to East Elmwood for the report of a robbery on the evening of Aug. 3.

Investigators say the mother and son were walking home near Kent Road and Nairn Avenue when they were confronted by two suspects asking for money.

“When they refused, they were both assaulted with a baseball bat,” WPS said in a news release. “The male victim was rendered unconscious, and his mother sustained lesser injuries. They were robbed of personal property, including a cell phone, and the suspects ran away.”

Police do not believe the victims and suspects knew each other.

Winnipeg’s Donovan Kane Tray Kipling, 26, and Dawson Marcus Keeper, 27, were arrested and are facing multiple charges. They were both detained in custody. None of the allegations have been proven in court.
