Sea Bears reflect on disappointing season

Following a disappointing end to the season, the Winnipeg Sea Bears reflected on why they fell short of expectations. Kurt Black reports.

Close but no cigar, that was the theme of year two for the Winnipeg Sea Bears, as the club ultimately failed to live up to their lofty expectations, after crashing out of the Playoffs in Round 1.

That disappointment was evident amongst the team Thursday, as they addressed the media for the final time this season.

“Obviously our goal was to get to championship weekend and give ourselves a chance at a championship this summer, we fell short of that,” explained Mike Taylor, the head coach & general manager of the Winnipeg Sea Bears.

With the likes of former NBA’ers Byron Mullens and Darius Days joining reigning CEBL MVP Teddy Allen, expectations were high heading into year two for the Sea Bears.

But following Allen’s stunning dismissal, the roster seemingly never settled. With new faces coming in and out of the lineup. A key factor that the team’s architect Taylor hopes to remedy in year three.

“Players had roles change on them, there were new personalities and new playing styles to adapt to. We want to settle things down with the roster movement and we want to give the guys more of a change to focus next year,” explained Taylor.

A sentiment echoed by veterans Alex Campbell, and Chad Posthumus, who viewed the lack of consistency and camaraderie as the difference-maker at the end of the day.

“It’s like we had to reinvent ourselves every single time that these guys came and left so I think that was the most challenging part,” said Campbell.

Posthumus adding, “Maybe if we are together the entire season like we were last year, maybe we win some of those games that were so close.”

With the CEBL championships in Winnipeg next summer, Taylor was non-committal on whether any members of this year’s squad will be back, but if Posthumus has his way, he’ll be returning home for another year.

“As long as they keep having me back I’ll keep coming out to play, I think I have a few years left under the belt.”
