Manitoba RCMP rescue stranded boaters, including infant, from Clearwater Lake

By News Staff

A boating excursion turned into a harrowing ordeal when a family from Mitchell, Man., found themselves stranded on Clearwater Lake without power late Friday night.

The Pas RCMP successfully rescued the family, including an infant son and two dogs.

At approximately 10 p.m., Mounties received a distress call from the boaters, who said they were about two kilometres from shore near Camper’s Cove boat launch. The boat’s power and propulsion had failed, leaving the family adrift for more than three hours as they attempted to fix the boat while night fell.

The family was unaware of their drifting direction due to the darkness, according to police, and faced worsening conditions with increasing winds and waves.

A rescue team of three RCMP officers hit the water to locate the stranded boat and were faced with three- to four-foot waves, according to a police release. The rescue team spotted a blinking light and located the boat dangerously close to a reef and rocks.

The officers secured the boat and towed it to shore. None of the occupants were physically injured, police say.
