Fire damages North End Women’s Centre

By News Staff

A women’s centre in Winnipeg’s North End was damaged by a fire early Sunday morning.

The North End Women’s Centre (NEWC) sustained fire damage to the front entrance of its main building – at 394 Selkirk Avenue.

A photo posted to the centre’s Facebook page shows bricks and a sign at the building’s entrance blackened by fire.

“We are very lucky that it wasn’t worse,” the centre wrote in the post.

The NEWC says the drop-in centre will be closed Monday “because we don’t have safe access for community to enter.”

It was also forced to cancel a full moon ceremony – an outdoor drumming event –scheduled for Monday evening.

The NEWC describes itself as the longest-running women’s resource centre in Winnipeg’s inner city.
