Man charged after breaking into van and sleeping at the wheel: Winnipeg police

A 33-year-old man found sleeping at the wheel of a van Friday morning has been arrested as Winnipeg police say he broke in.

Officers say around 7 a.m. on July 19, WPS responded to an alley on Stradbrook Avenue after receiving a report that a man was sleeping in a parked van.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the man sleeping inside and were able to wake him up and take him into custody.

While searching the man, officers found a sheathed hunting knife. This led to a search of the man’s duffle bag, where officers found and seized a sawed-off shogun, 12-gauge ammunition, and multiple break-in instruments.

Police were able to learn that the man had broken into the 2011 Chevrolet Express van, and damaged the steering column before falling asleep at the wheel.

As a result, 33-year-old Rick James Walker of Winnipeg now faces multiple charges including firearm-related offences, theft of a vehicle, possession of break-in instruments, and probation order breaches.
