Last Wednesday an entire neighbourhood was rocked after an unexplained explosion at a home on Camrose Bay.

Luckily, both residents weren’t home at the time of the blast, but the same can’t be said for a beloved cat, that was found amidst the rubble and is now in the care of the Winnipeg Humane Society.

“She’s been through so much,” said Audrey Barnabe, the manager of intake and animal care at the Winnipeg Humane Society.

Given the name Matilda by Humane Society staff, the black and white female cat was discovered last Friday just 400 metres away from the explosion that leveled the Camrose Bay home. With injuries consistent with a fire.

“Singed whiskers and fur and second degree burns on all four paw pads, so she came in in quite a bit of pain.”

Barnabe says while the injuries will heal, the emotional stress that she has endured will take time to dissipate.

“She’s very stressed in the shelter or else we could visit, but she already looks more comfortable and is doing well.”

To date, no one has come forward to claim Matilda but is confident that once she has recovered there will be no shortage of families vying to welcome this courageous little feline into their home.

“There is already interest in adoption and we are hoping that works out for her,” explained Barnabe.
