Construction begins on 156-unit high-rise along major transit corridor in Fort-Rouge

Wind and rain did not stop the groundbreaking of a new housing development, aimed to be accessible to transit and active transit routes in Winnipeg. Joanne Roberts has the story.

The ground has been broken on what’s being called Winnipeg’s most transit-oriented development in the Fort-Rouge neighbourhood.

Wind and heavy rain did not stop Winnipeg Mayor Scott Gillingham, city councillors Markus Chambers and Sherri Rollins, and others from gathering at the new site of a 16-storey apartment tower.

“Projects like 25 Station Place are crucial as they address the need for more housing in our city, and housing that has access to public transportation and active public transportation trails,” Gillingham said.

The housing development, helmed by Carrington Real Estate, will be home to 156 residential units and commercial retail space. It’s expected to be complete in 2026.

“It is a serious endeavour to make sure that we all have stability in the city of Winnipeg,” said Rollins, the councillor for Fort-Rouge East Fort Garry.

Gillingham says the development comes amid the “most significant reforms to housing policy in our city’s history.”

“Some of that was motivated by the federal government’s housing accelerator fund program, but a lot of that was already underway including the streamlining of our permitting process and adding more density along major transportation corridors like this,” added the mayor.

The building will boast a state-of-the-art geothermal heating and cooling system that will be 40 per cent better than national standards.

“When you have the ability to construct to that level, it’s just a matter of dollars and cents,” said Carrington Real Estate president, Jared Carrington. “So if you can actually work the budget to support going 40 per cent over (the) national energy code or building with better structures, construction typeology, it works out for a better quality product, a better quality living experience for the tenant.”

Carrington Real Estate says such developments are going to be the future of housing in the city, and predicts next year on this day, people will be gathering for the groundbreaking for the second phase of the development.
