Winnipeg 150 celebrations take place with community block party

Hundreds of families gathered at the Charleswood Dog Park on Saturday for Winnipeg 150 In The Ward; a celebration for the Charleswood, Tuxedo and Westwood neighbourhoods. Joanne Roberts has more.

As part of Winnipeg’s 150th year celebrations, city councillor Evan Duncan hosted “Winnipeg 150 In The Ward” — an all-day block party Saturday, which celebrates the Charleswood, Tuxedo, and Westwood neighbourhoods.

Talented musicians filled the air with tunes that could be heard across the entirety of the Charleswood Dog Park, where hundreds of people and families came out to celebrate.

“There’s a history of celebration in our community, and this marks a great opportunity to come together and connect with one another. I encourage you to take part in the festivities and get to know your neighbours,” said Councillor Evan Duncan in a press release. “This celebration is 150 years in the making. I’m looking forward to marking this important milestone with the residents across our community!”

Winnipeg 150 In The Ward is a wonderful chance to mark this milestone anniversary together,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham in a press release. “The diversity and vibrancy of Winnipeg’s neighbourhoods are one of our greatest strengths, and I know Charleswood – Tuxedo – Westwood excels in community spirit. Come out, have fun, and let’s enjoy our amazing city together!”

There were many activities available, such as face painting and caricatures, rock climbing, and a mini basketball set-up where people could shoot some hoops and win some Winnipeg Sea Bears items.

The smell of food hung in the air, and no one was left hungry at the party with multiple food trucks on site, and neither was anyone tempted to leave empty-handed, as Third & Bird market showcased many local talents and crafts with their mini pop-up.

“I’m super excited to step on stage and take part in this great celebration,” said Catie St Germain, Manitoba singer and songwriter – granddaughter of Canadian musician Ray St Germain. “I grew up visiting my grandparents in Westwood, and it’s a special feeling to be able to come back and perform in the community.”

The celebration was one of many community events planned throughout the year to celebrate Winnipeg’s 150th year.
