Live grenade found in Kildare-Redonda garage

By News Staff

Winnipeg police say a Transcona resident found a live grenade while cleaning out his garage Tuesday afternoon.

The Winnipeg Police Service says officers were called to the Kildare-Redonda neighbourhood around 12:30 p.m. regarding an explosive device.

Members of the WPS bomb unit and Canadian Armed Forces ammunition technicians safely removed the grenade, which was later determined to be live.

“The origin of the device is unknown, but not believed to be stored with criminal intent,” WPS said in a news release.

Police say explosive devices are sometimes improperly left behind at commercial and residential buildings. “They should all be treated as live ordnance,” police warn.

Authorities recommended people do not handle the explosive, call police, and leave the area immediately.
