Following the beginning of the Skibicki trial, many are preparing for a tough month of emotions as more details come to light, but it isn’t just the families directly involved that are feeling the impacts,  other families are still searching for their own — and want answers too.

“This trial is going to be real heavy on a lot of families that don’t have closure and went through the same thing,” said Sue Caribou, Tanya Nepinak’s Aunt. “This is really bringing up a lot of hurt right now.”

Caribou says the Skibicki trial is bringing back some painful memories of her niece Tanya Nepinak who was last seen on Sept. 13, 2011 after leaving her Winnipeg home to walk to a pizza restaurant a few blocks away, saying she went through a similar situation with the Shawn Lambs trial in 2013 after Lamb denied having any involvement in Nepinak’s death and hopes the families involved in the Skibicki trial can get some closure.

“I just want to let the family know I’ll be praying for them, I understand what they’re going through and I hope they get some justice.”

Caribou is also hoping this trial can bring light to others who have lost loved ones and are still searching for answers, as Nepinaks body was never recovered, despite a police search of the Brady Road landfill following the discovery of remains in October of 2012, but says if they did a more thorough search, she’s sure they would find many of the loved ones who are still missing.

“I pray they will search all the landfills, treat them like unmarked graves, and bring our loved ones home.”

While the NDP government has promised to search the Prairie Green Landfill, there is no guarantee that they will research the Brady Landfill, with Caribou saying it’s hard to be hopeful and have the thought of getting closure ripped away

“I’ll be devastated if they don’t search the Brady Landfill I don’t want to fall hard, I don’t have my family to fall hard.”
