Winnipeg firefighters battle 5 blazes overnight

By News Staff

Winnipeg fire crews worked around the clock Saturday morning after being called to five different blazes in the city.

There were no injuries reported, and all five fires are under investigation.

Sutherland Avenue

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews were called to a vacant industrial building on Sutherland Avenue – between Maple Street North and Argyle Street North – around 12:50 a.m.

The multi-storey building in Winnipeg’s Point Douglas area was previously damaged, and sections left partially collapsed, in a fire on July 4, 2023. That fire spanned an entire city block, and the building was considered a complete loss.

“Several other significant fires have occurred at the location since then,” WFPS said in a news release.

On Saturday morning the building was again engulfed in flames and smoke when crews arrived. The blaze was declared extinguished at 6:11 a.m.

Inkster Boulevard

There was a fire in a single-storey commercial warehouse and office building on Inkster Boulevard near Sheppard Street, with crews being called around 1:42 a.m. It was declared under control at 2:04 a.m.

Dufferin Avenue

An hour later, firefighters responded to a large fire at a commercial structure in North End – on Dufferin Avenue near Andrews Street.

The WFPS says several passenger vehicles and a semi-trailer unit were engulfed in flames. They add electrical lines were damaged by the fire and had fallen on the building.

“Crews immediately launched a fire attack to prevent the fire from extending to the structure,” WFPS said. “Crews ventilated smoke from building and monitored it for fire extension. Manitoba Hydro crews attended to safely disconnect electrical lines.”

The fire was declared under control at 4:08 a.m.

The vehicles and semi-trailer are considered total losses. The building sustained minimal heat damage, WFPS says.

Manitoba Avenue

At the same time as the Dufferin Avenue fire was declared under control, firefighters were called to a vacant home on Manitoba Avenue near Shaughnessy Street. Crews battled the blaze from inside the home, and it was declared under control at 4:42 a.m.

Flora Avenue

The fifth and final overnight fire that needed the attention of Winnipeg fire crews was at a garage on Flora Avenue near Parr Street around 5:42 a.m.

WFPS says crews arrived to find the garage fully engulfed in flames and smoke. The fire was declared under control at 5:57 a.m.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service says the adjacent house on the property is vacant and has extensive damage from previous fires.
