The family of a 26-year-old Winnipeg man who was fatally shot after three armed men forcibly entered this rooming house behind me last week, wants him to be remembered for the loving person he was.

The incident took place on February 15, in the 300 block of Magnus Avenue, where three armed men forcibly entered the suite and confronted 26-year-old Mitchell Hanslip leading to the fatal shooting.

When police arrived, they caught the three suspects fleeing the property leading to the suspects being charged with second-degree murder. Mitchell’s sister Harley Tyo says they were shocked and heartbroken by the news and can only guess what exactly took place.

“Honestly, I think it was like gang-related that’s pretty much what I think happened,” said Tyo.

Tyo and Mitchell’s mother Gretta Hanslip say he was an irreplaceable part of their family, as he was not only respected and loved, but he always knew how to make everyone around him laugh.

“He was a really respectful man, he has five babies and he was really caring about them, he loved his babies and loves his siblings.”

A vigil was held in Mitchell’s honor on Sunday, with dozens coming out to support the family and remember his life, which Tyo said at least brought some comfort.

“We felt supported in a way, yes we felt supported it was nice,” said Tyo.

As for the three men charged with second-degree murder, Greta said she was told it could take up to a year before they are sentenced and is just hoping that they aren’t let off with a slap on the wrist for taking her son’s life, saying they have seen other cases where the accused have been let out in just a few years.

“I hope it’s a severe punishment, more punishment than they have been giving to people in the city, it’s not fair to take a life and only go to jail for that long I don’t think that’s fair at all because he’s not gonna come back, so they just need to stay there for a really long time,” said Hanslip.

“Not just getting the slap on the wrist like three to five years I don’t want that I want something done about this because it’s just going to keep happening over and over and over and over again”

Hanslip says going forward she will be organizing a protest in front of law courts with other families of murdered victims, as there needs to be justice for Mitchell and others who lost family members to violent crimes.
