Seine River School Division custodial employees begin strike

The union representing custodial employees in the Seine River School Division (SRSD) says it has begun a strike on Monday.

Manitoba Government and General Employees’ Union (MGEU) Local No. 143 says it’s withdrawing all services from the school division while contract negotiations are at the bargaining table.

The school division says their latest proposal would see an annual pay increase dating back to 2021 — 3 per cent for 2021, 2 per cent for 2022, 2 per cent for 2023, and 2.5 per cent for 2024 — as well as market adjustments for daytime custodians, and a continuation of a shift premium for evening custodians.

The SRSD says over the course of the strike, some services may be impacted. However, it has noted temporary staff have been contracted to fill gaps.

The school division says it will be continuing to provide educational services throughout the strike.
