Second man charged in connection to kidnapping and sexual assault of teen

Winnipeg police say a second man has been charged in connection to a September 2023 abduction and sexual assault.

Police say in September, a teenage girl reported that she was walking home near Portage Avenue and Sturgeon Road, on Sunday evening when she was abducted at knifepoint.

She then told police the man drove her to an undisclosed location where she was sexually assaulted repeatedly over several hours.

The WPS’s Sex Crimes Unit took over the investigation and was able to identify the suspect as 40-year-old Cory Lee Whalen, and he was charged with 12 charges.

WPS say since Whalen was charged, the investigation continued. During the investigation, they were able to identify a secondary suspect.

Since, 39-year-old Shawn Ryan Leslie has been charged with sexual assault.
