Man charged after attempting to punch Winnipeg police officer

Winnipeg police have charged a man from Garden Hill First Nation for assaulting a police officer Monday morning.

WPS says around 1:45 a.m., while officers were sitting in front of the police headquarters at 245 Smith, they were approached by a man who reportedly then tried to punch the driver through the open window.

The officers then reported the man threw a garbage bin through the front windows of a store on Graham Avenue. From there, he entered the building and tried to use the elevators.

Security within the building prevented the man from leaving the elevator, which is when the man reportedly returned the the first floor, picked up a piece of broken glass and waited for officers.

Officers reportedly used a taser to bring the suspect under control and took him into custody.

Since the 25-year-old has been charged with assaulting a peace officer and breaking and entering.

WPS also confirmed no injuries were reported from the incident.
