Operation Red Nose gears up for New Year’s Eve

The volunteer service is picking people up from New Years Eve at 9pm to 3am the next day, to help people avoid drinking and driving as they enjoy festivities. Joanne Roberts has the story.

Operation Red Nose is gearing up for New Year’s Eve.

The volunteer service picks up people, and their vehicles, allowing them to drink while they ring in the new year, and still have a safe ride home at the end of the night.

Winnipeg co-ordinator Sharra Hinton says despite having fewer volunteers than usual over the past few years, people can still count on them.

“We’ve been able to keep up with the ride requests, so whoever is asking for a ride, we are getting them home safe and sound,” said Hinton.

Rides are available from Dec. 31 at 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. the next morning. Hinton says the service is available to anyone in the Winnipeg area.

“If they are calling us, that is wonderful. If they are finding another ride home, I really hope they are doing that rather than choosing to drink and drive,” Hinton said.

Operation Red Nose is run entirely by volunteers, and any donations made to drivers will go to the Manta Swim Club.

Rides can be booked on the Operation Red Nose website or by calling 204-947-6673.
