A Winnipeg father and son are combining the energetic vibes of Punjabi music with the spirit of Halloween to create a unique holiday hit.
Amrit Kang and his 13-year-old son Yuvraj hope to make the year’s spookiest holiday a little more inclusive.
They call their musical fusion “Ghost Bhangra.”
“We related our culture with it, because it’s Punjabi music, so we are trying to blend two cultures so that kids of all races can enjoy a song about Halloween,” said Kang.
“Music, art, dance, it has no boundaries, no language. It’s just all to share the common thing, to have fun, to meet with each other, that was the whole motive.”
The father-son duo first began blending their culture with holiday classics last winter with a music video titled “Aaya Santa” that got more than 100,000 views on YouTube.
After that success, the pair got to work to create something special for Halloween.
“So my dad actually wrote the lyrics, so we spent a lot of time working on the song, and we had so much fun doing it,” said Yuvraj.
“He is a natural talent,” added Kang of his son. “So I just give him ideas, and he agrees. And that gives me so much energy. If I give 100 per cent, he comes back with a 100 per cent, and it makes a superpower.”
With their latest creation a hit amongst his classmates, in addition to already garnering more than 45,000 views, Yuvraj says he feels great pride, but adds he’ll be sticking to the books for the time being.
“I’ll be doing my studies first priority, and then after that I’ll be keeping my music,” he told CityNews.
Kang credited numerous individuals in the Indo Canadian community, as well as the Assiniboine Zoo – where part of the video clip was filmed – for helping bring their vision to life. The father is challenging others to impact the world in a positive way through art
“Use your energy, power, tools, whatever you have to make this world a beautiful place.”
