Former band office destroyed by fire in northeastern Manitoba

By News Staff

Police say two men are facing charges after a fire at the former band office of Gods Lake Narrows First Nation.

Police say they received a report Monday around 1:30 p.m. of two men causing a disturbance, including one man armed with a weapon and threatening to light the former band office on fire.

When officers arrived on scene, smoke was already coming from the building, which was a storage site and contained historical records.

The fire was extinguished by local fire crews, but RCMP say it is estimated to be a total loss.

Officers identified two suspects.
Delmar Hastings, 39, of Gods Lake Narrows, was charged with arson. He is in custody but awaiting a remand hearing.

Erin Kanabee, 45, of Crane River First Nation, was arrested and charged with arson, possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose and possession of incendiary material. He was released on an undertaking and will appear in court Jan. 10, 2024.
