3-hour standoff in Valley Gardens ends with man’s arrest: WPS

By News Staff

Winnipeg police say a 36-year-old man was arrested after a three-hour standoff Friday evening in Valley Gardens.

The Winnipeg Police Service says officers were called to a home for a report of a domestic dispute around 8:20 p.m.

Police say a man with a knife retreated inside the home and refused to exit. Three people managed to get out of the home safely.

The crisis negotiation team was called to deal with the “armed and barricaded” situation.

WPS says the suspect was taken into custody after about three hours following a “coordinated response by East District General Patrol Units, Air1, and the Tactical Support Team.”

The suspect was taken to hospital in stable condition and was later medically cleared.

“Officers spoke with and verified the well-being of the occupants, who reported no physical injuries due to the incident,” WPS said in a news release.

The 36-year-old suspect was charged with assault, uttering threats and four counts of disobeying a court order. He was detained in custody.

Police say they are not naming the suspect to protect his family’s identity.
