19-year-old charged with impaired driving in Winnipeg crash that killed 20-year-old woman

A 20-year-old woman is dead, and four others were injured in a crash involving two vehicles in northwest Winnipeg on Sunday morning.
The 19-year-old man behind the wheel of one of the vehicles, which Winnipeg police have said was a stolen Honda CR-V, was arrested and charged with impaired driving and other offences.
The woman who lost her life was also in the CR-V, police say, along with a 22-year-old woman who remains in hospital with life-threatening injuries, and a 20-year-old man who was hospitalized in stable condition.
The accused received treatment for minor injuries in hospital, as did the 43-year-old man at the wheel of the second vehicle.
Winnipeg police say the crash at Leila Avenue and McGregor Street, in the city’s West Kildonan neighbourhood, happened around 7 a.m.
Police say the stolen CR-V was speeding north on McGregor when it ran a red light and collided with a Kia Seltos at the intersection.
“The impact caused the CR-V to become airborne before striking a traffic light standard, rolling over, and colliding with a tree, resulting in catastrophic damage to both vehicles,” the WPS said in a news release.
Police believe speed and impairment were major factors in the collision.
Dorian Beardy was arrested at the scene. He has been charged with possession of stolen property, driving while impaired, and failing to comply with the condition of a release order.
Police say he was also arrested on three outstanding warrants for aggravated assault and failing to comply with undertaking and release order conditions. He was detained in custody.
Authorities say more charges against him are pending. None of the charges against him have been tested in court.
The WPS traffic division is continuing to investigate.
