Manitoba police watchdog looking into arrest after teen suffered broken leg

Manitoba’s police watchdog — the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) — says it has opened an investigation surrounding the arrest of a teen in Winnipeg earlier this month after he suffered a broken leg.

Winnipeg police say on Oct. 12, while officers were patrolling along Magnus Avenue, they noticed two teens who looked like they were holding weapons.

The officers are said to have exited their vehicle in an effort to talk to the teens, when they took off on foot.

The officers were able to catch up to both the youths and place them in custody. However, police noted that during one of the attempted arrests, one of the teens tried to flee a second time and suffered a serious injury when police tried to stop him.

He was taken to a hospital where it was confirmed that he had broken his tibia and fibula.

Per IIU regulations, the WPS informed the police watchdog of the incident.

The IIU is asking if anyone has any information or video footage of the incident to contact investigators at 1-844-667-6060.
