Health Canada issues recall of turkeys for western Canada

Health Canada issued a recall of turkeys for western Canada on Saturday due to a “possible spoilage.”

The health agency says Sunrise Farms Young Turkey with giblets with an expiration date of Oct. 11 should be returned, and grocers are asked to not sell, serve, or distribute the product.

Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan carry the product, but when the turkeys were sold was not made clear. The microbial contamination is not considered harmful.

This follows Sobeys Inc.’s recall of Grade A Fresh Turkey from the same brand on their website for western Canada, asking customers to return the birds for a full refund.

In a statement emailed to CityNews, Sobeys says the precautionary decision was made “out of an abundance of caution.”

The recalls come just days before Canadians prepare to cook up turkeys for Thanksgiving dinner.
