Woman facing 15 charges after shooting on Martha Street: Winnipeg police

Winnipeg police say a 23-year-old woman is facing 15 charges following a shooting last week.

The Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) says it responded to a report of a shooting just after 4 a.m. on Sept. 14, along Martha Street.

When officers arrived, they requested an ambulance to take a 42-year-old man to the hospital as he was suffering from a gunshot wound in his lower body. He has since been upgraded from unstable to stable.

Police say a 23-year-old woman was found nearby and was taken into custody.

Through initial stages of the investigation, the WPS learned two groups of people were involved in a verbal dispute.

“The dispute escalated when the suspect retrieved an improvised firing device (zip gun) concealed on her person and discharged it toward the victim, striking him in the lower body,” said police in a statement.

“The victim flagged down officers present nearby, advising he was shot by the suspect, who was still nearby. Officers arrested the suspect and recovered the zip gun and thirteen (13) .22 calibre rounds of ammunition which they seized as evidence.”

The 23-year-old has since been charged with aggravated assault, possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized, two counts of possession of a firearm contrary to a prohibition order, carrying a concealed weapon, six counts of failing to comply with conditions of a release, and four counts of warrants of arrest.
