298 designer glasses worth $116K stolen from Winnipeg stores: police

Winnipeg police say nearly 300 pairs of designer eyewear worth more than $116,000 were stolen in a crime spree this summer.

The Winnipeg Police Service says two suspects in their 20s were arrested and charged in relation to the alleged thefts, which police say took place between June 5 and Aug. 28.

WPS members with the property crime unit say three separate locations were targeted.

On June 5, police say a suspect stole 23 pairs of designer sunglasses valued at $5,600 from a business of Regent Avenue West near Peguis Street.

On June 12 and Aug. 28, police say a suspect stole a 102 pairs of designer eyeglass frames and sunglasses over the two days, valued at $36,000, from a business on St. Mary’s Road near Avalon Road.

On June 23, July 6 and Aug. 4, police say a suspect stole 173 pairs of designer sunglasses over the three days from a business on Sterling Lyon Parkway near McCreary Road.

In total, police allege 298 pairs of glasses were stolen.

On Sept. 8, police say a search warrant was executed at a suite on Pembina Highway near Markham Road.

“Over 40 pairs of designer glasses valued at over $12,000 have been recovered,” WPS said in a news release.

Anthony Rodriguez, 22, was charged with six counts of theft over $5,000. He was detained in custody.

A 20-year-old woman was charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000. She was released on an undertaking.
