Air quality statement issued for southern Manitoba due to wildfire smoke

By News Staff

A special air quality statement has been issued for parts of southern Manitoba due to wildfire smoke.

Environment Canada says the smoke is coming from fires in the Northwest Territories.

Brandon, Neepawa, Carberry, and Treherne are the areas most impacted by the smoke.

The smoke is expected to clear later Tuesday, according to Environment Canada, however smoke concentrations can fluctuate over short distances.

People with respiratory conditions, the elderly, and young children should take caution.

For those who work outdoors, respirator-type masks are recommended, and staying well hydrated can also help the body cope with smoke.

The air quality health index forecasts high risk levels between seven to nine into Thursday evening.
