1 person injured as crews battle 6 overnight fires across Winnipeg

“It’s common everywhere,” said one resident after Winnipeg saw six structure fires in nine hours. Edward Djan has more.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) says fire crews had to battle six fires over a nine-hour period across the city, which left one person injured and at least 12 people displaced.

The cause of all six fires are under investigation.

Riverbend Avenue

Starting just after 8:30 p.m., WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a bungalow in the 0-100 block of Riverbend Avenue.

Within 20 minutes of arriving at the scene, firefighters were able to declare the fire under control.

One person was treated by paramedics at the scene but did not require a trip to the hospital.

Dufferin Avenue

A couple of hours later, fire crews responded to a report of a fire at a vacant property at a house on Dufferin Avenue.

Around an hour-and-a-half later, firefighters were able to declare the fire under control. WFPS says due to the structural instability of the house, crews arranged an emergency demolition.

CityNews spoke to Danny Henderson, who is in the process of moving from his North End home, which was the Dufferin Ave. house fire.

He says his time living at his soon-to-be former home has been filled with living next to structure fires.

Police say the home was set on fire by kids.

Sherbrook Street

Just before 1 a.m., WFPS responded to another house fire, this time in the 400 block of Sherbrook Street.

Within 20 minutes, crews were able to declare the fire as under control.

One person was treated at the scene and taken to paramedics in unstable condition.

Lipton Street

Around 4:43 a.m., fire crews responded to a report of a fire in a home along the 200 block of Lipton Street.

Roughly half an hour after responding to the call, the fire was declared under control.

WFPS says everyone who was in the home at the time was able to evacuate prior to firefighters showing up, and no injuries were reported.

In total, 12 people were displaced. The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services (ESS) also responded to the scene, and worked to provided those impacted by the fire with temporary housing.

Selkirk Avenue

Within 10 minutes of the report of the Lipton house fire, WFPS responded to another call, this time at a home in the 200 block of Selkirk Avenue.

Over an hour later, fire crews were able to declare the fire under control.

Peguis Street

Lastly around 5:30 a.m., WFPS responded to a fire in the 200 block of Peguis Street.

Roughly 40 minutes later, fire crews were able to declare the fire under control.
