Woman charged for bear spraying first responder athlete at Winnipeg fast food restaurant

Winnipeg police say a 25-year-old woman is facing assault charges after bear spraying two people over the weekend.

Officers say a man flagged them down along Goulet Street after being assaulted at around 7 a.m. on Saturday.

The man, who’s in his 50s and is competing as an athlete in the World Police and Fire Games, was at a fast food restaurant when he noticed an altercation between two women and attempted to intervene, police say.

One of the women pulled out bear spray and used it on the man and the other woman before fleeing the fast food joint.

WPS searched the area and was able to locate the suspect with help from witnesses.

The woman, who police say is a 25-year-old from Winnipeg, is facing charges of assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon. She is expected to appear in court at a later date.

Police say the man was treated at the scene by paramedics and note the woman, who was also bear sprayed, left prior to officers arriving.
