Former Maple Leafs, Canadiens center Galchenyuk arrested for hit and run

Former Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens center Alex Galchenyuk is facing numerous charges after he was arrested in Arizona last week, the Scottsdale Police Department confirmed in an email to Sportsnet on Thursday.

The Athletic’s Katie Strang was the first to report on the news.

The Scottsdale Police Department said Galchenyuk was arrested on July 9 on a number of charges, including private property hit and run, disorderly conduct, failure to obey, resisting arrest, threatening or intimidating.

U.S. authorities confirmed to Sportsnet that for the hit and run, “it was only property damage with no injuries.”

According to Strang, a jail official said Galchenyuk was booked into the city jail on the evening of July 9, then released the following day on his own recognizance.

The Arizona Coyotes placed Galchenyuk on unconditional waivers seeking to terminate his contract due to an off-ice issue.

The 29-year-old signed a one-year, two-way deal with Arizona as a free agent on July 1 — just 12 days ago.

Galchenyuk, who was born in Milwaukee to Belarusian parents, played just 11 games with the Colorado Avalanche last season and didn’t register a point. He was traded before free agency opened from Colorado to the Nashville Predators for Ryan Johansen.

Galchenyuk was drafted 3rd overall by the Canadiens in the 2012 NHL Draft. He played six seasons in Montreal, registering a career-high 30 goals and 56 points during the 2015-16 season. In 2018, the Canadiens traded him to the Coyotes for Max Domi.

After bouncing around with a few teams, the Maple Leafs acquired Galchenyuk from the Carolina Hurricanes in 2021. He played 26 games with the Leafs, scoring four goals and 12 points. He appeared in six playoff games with Toronto, finishing with four points.
