Manitoba police watchdog investigating in custody death

Manitoba’s police watchdog is investigating the death of a man following a use of force incident involving Winnipeg police.

The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) says on July 5, they were advised of the incident by WPS.

According to WPS, officers located a stolen vehicle parked near a housing complex on Robson Street.

Officers noticed a man in the vehicle and tried to arrest him.

“A use of force encounter resulted in a conducted energy weapon being deployed,” said the IIU in a statement.

Police then say the man became unresponsive after he was taken into custody. WPS took him to St. Boniface Hospital, where he was declared dead.

The IIU is asking if anyone has any information or video footage of the incident to contact investigators at 1-844-667-6060.
