2 arrests in fatal stabbing of father, days after welcoming new baby

Two suspects have been charged in connection with the fatal stabbing of Kevin James Wescoupe, the Winnipeg man who was killed just days after welcoming a new baby.

Wescoupe, 41, died in hospital after a stabbing on Austin Street North in North Point Douglas on May 2.

Police say when they arrived on scene around 1:15 a.m., they found two victims – Wescoupe and another man – suffering from stab wounds.

Both were taken to hospital in critical and unstable condition, with Wescoupe succumbing to his injuries. The other man, a 38-year-old, was stabilized.

The Winnipeg Police Service homicide unit says it identified two suspects. Investigators believe they confronted Wescoupe and the second man, and both victims were stabbed.

Police believe the suspects did not know the victims.

The WPS says the suspects were arrested Monday – one at a home in St. Vital on St. Anne’s Road and the other in North End on Machray Avenue.

Taylor Brandon Lee Flett, 24, was charged with second-degree murder and attempted murder.

Kevin Cook McKay, 23, was charged with manslaughter and aggravated assault.

Both were detained in custody.

The family told CityNews earlier this month they believe it was a case of mistaken identity.

“Kevin is going to be remembered as a loving father and an awesome man who never caused any trouble,” one of the man’s loved ones, who preferred to remain anonymous, said the day after the stabbing.

“He was a really good man. He was awesome with his children. He was a loving father.”
Wescoupe welcomed a new baby just three days before his death.
