Alphonso Davies biography highlights humble beginnings

By Sandra Prusina

A new biography shows a glimpse into the life of one of the most famous Canadian athletes in the world.

Alphonso Davies: A New Hope tells the story of the professional soccer player and star of the Canadian men’s team.

Despite all the trophies and accolades for Davies, including a Champions League title with Bayern Munich and playing a major role in the Canadian men’s soccer team’s first World Cup appearance in 36 years, it all comes back to humble beginnings.

Davies, who received his Canadian citizenship in 2017, was born to Liberian parents in 2000. The new book covers the journey of the Davies family, who came to Canada as refugees after fleeing the Liberian civil war.

The 224-page work also chronicles the Canadian’s return to Edmonton in the famous Iceteca World Cup Qualifier in November 2021.

Author Farhan Devji saw the player’s prolific skill firsthand while working for the Vancouver Whitecaps. Davies was playing there as a 15-year-old at the time.

“You could see the potential right away. You saw the athleticism, his ability on the ball to dribble and take players on and make things happen,” he told CityNews.

“But if anyone told you they thought he was going to be a Champions League winner and playing at Bayern Munich at the age of 19, 20 years old, they’d probably be lying.”

Alphonso Davies: A New Hope hits bookshelves on May 2.
