Man charged after semi, car crash in Winnipeg

Winnipeg police have charged a 26-year-old man following a collision between a semi and a car that occurred in the area of Oakpoint Highway and Selkirk Avenue on Wednesday.

The WPS says officers and firefighters responded to the collision around 12:15 p.m.

It is believed that the car was traveling west on Selkirk Avenue when it was hit by the semi, which ran a red light.

“The truck continued to drive before stopping and subsequently met with police. As a result of the collision, the semi’s fuel tank was severely damaged and leaked over 600 litres of diesel fuel. The single vehicle was rendered inoperable,” said Winnipeg police in a statement.

A man in his 40s and a woman in her 30s, who were both in the vehicle, were taken to hospital and have since been released.

The driver of the semi was charged with offences relating to the Highway Traffic Act, vehicle equipment and safety inspection regulations, and commercial vehicle trip inspection regulations.

Fire crews kept the scene closed for environmental cleanup along the road and in the nearby ditches, due to the diesel leak from the semi’s fuel tank.
