The Winnipeg Police Service says, on March 17, it responded to the Provincial Court Law Courts for the report of a 20-year-old woman who was assaulted by an unknown man.

Officers found the victim with an upper-body injury sustained during an alleged physical assault. Police say she was taken to hospital in stable condition.

Investigators believe the victim was walking from St. Mary Avenue and Kennedy Street to the Law Courts building around 5:45 a.m. when the suspect began to follow her.

As the victim reached the Kennedy Street entrance, the man approached her and there was a struggle.

Police say the victim fell to the sidewalk, and the suspect touched her on the lower body. He fled on foot before police arrived.

The WPS sex crimes unit is continuing its investigation.
