Suspect wanted after sexual assault outside Law Courts: police

By News Staff

Winnipeg police are searching for a suspect in connection with the sexual assault of a 20-year-old woman in front of the Law Courts building on Friday morning.

The Winnipeg Police Service says it responded to the Provincial Court Law Courts for the report of a woman who was assaulted by an unknown man.

Officers found the victim with an upper-body injury sustained during an alleged physical assault. Police say she was taken to hospital in stable condition.

Investigators believe the victim was walking from St. Mary Avenue and Kennedy Street to the Law Courts building around 5:45 a.m. when the suspect began to follow her.

As the victim reached the Kennedy Street entrance, the man approached her and there was a struggle.

Police say the victim fell to the sidewalk, and the suspect touched her on the lower body. He fled on foot before police arrived.

The suspect is described as a man between 20 to 30 years old, about five-foot-nine, with a larger build and long dark hair. He was wearing a black jacket.

The WPS sex crimes unit is investigating.
