Popular brand of metallic drinking bottle recalled due to chemical hazard

A popular brand of metallic drinking bottles, once endorsed by Oprah Winfrey as one of her Favourite Things, is being recalled due to the presence of lead.

Health Canada is asking everyone to stop using Bindle Bottles after the company issued a voluntary recall of its “sip and stash” water bottle due to a chemical hazard.

The bottles, which are sold in four sizes (32oz, 24oz, 20oz and 13oz) along with the 24oz bottle that is part of the Puppy Pack, may contain excess amounts of lead on the small soldering dot in the bottom storage compartment.

“This potentially poses an exposure risk to lead if unpackaged food is placed in the dry storage compartment,” the company said in a statement.

A recent Consumer Reports test in the U.S. found lead levels that were over a thousand times the amount allowed in many consumer products.

Lead is highly toxic, especially to children. A range of serious health effects has been associated with exposure to lead, including anemia, vomiting, diarrhea, and heart and immune system. In extreme cases, there have been deaths.

Health Canada says between June 2019 and January 2023 400 bottles were sold across Canada.

Health Canada says as of March 7, 2023, it has received no reports of incidents or injuries associated with the product.

Consumers are being asked to contact Bindle Bottle LLC for a free repair kit.
