Winnipeg police seize $3.4 million worth of drugs and rugs in bust

By Swidda Rassy

Winnipeg police’s drug enforcement unit was notified that opium was detected on several rugs being shipped into Winnipeg from Dubai. As a result, an investigation was initiated called ‘Project Poppy.’

WPS with the help of the Canada Border Services Agency seized over $3.4 million worth of heroin and opium drugs, and around $500,000 cash.

“This is quite large, it’s an international investigation quite frankly, involving countries overseas. This is something I know the CBSA is dealing with and in Winnipeg we’re seeing more heroin now, given the fentanyl crisis we have in the city,” said WPS Inspector Elton Hall.

In addition to the rug seizure, a second investigation was launched, in the Maples neighbourhood.

“Seven individuals were arrested and police seized seven kilograms of heroin or opium with the estimated street value of $1.4 million.”

As a result of the two trafficking investigations, a total of 10 people from Winnipeg have been arrested, totaling more than 40 drug-related offences.
