By The Canadian Press and News Staff

This year’s leading Canadian Screen Awards nominees include a series about North America’s Black train porters in the 1920s and a coming-of-age film set in Scarborough.

The first season of the Black-led CBC and BET Plus series “The Porter” is the leading nominee with 19 nods heading into this year’s awards, including best drama series, best writing in a drama and best costume design.

Meanwhile, Toronto filmmaker Clement Virgo’s feature “Brother,” which is based on the novel by David Chariandy, is the leading film nominee with 14 nods, including best motion picture, and achievement in direction for Virgo.

Other top nominees include “Sort Of,” a comedy about a gender-fluid millennial navigating work and romantic relationships, which received 15 nominations for its second season. It’s tied as runner-up for most overall nominations with the kids’ series “Detention Adventure.”

CityNews received two nominations, including CityNews at 6 for best local newscast and Toronto reporter Cynthia Mulligan for best local reporter. Breakfast Television was nominated for Best Morning Show

A full list of nominees can be found on the Canadian Screen Awards website.

The awards celebrate the best in homegrown film, television and digital media, and this is the first year organizers will honour film and TV performances in gender-neutral categories.

The bulk of the 157 awards will be handed out throughout seven galas held between April 11 and 14, leading up to a pre-taped special hosted by Samantha Bee on Apr. 16 that will air on CBC and CBC Gem.
