Hammer-wielding suspect robbed store, assaulted people, stole purse: police

By News Staff

Police say a 32-year-old Winnipeg woman with a hammer robbed a business on Portage Avenue, stole a woman’s purse and assaulted three people Monday afternoon.

The Winnipeg Police Service believes the woman stole merchandise from a store on Portage near Maryland Street. When an employee intervened, the woman brandished a hammer before fleeing on foot.

The suspect is then believed to have approached a 43-year-old woman and requested a cigarette. She then assaulted her before taking her purse.

In the ensuing physical struggle, police say the suspect took out a hammer.

When two Good Samaritans got involved – a 55-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman – they were reportedly struck by the suspect’s hammer. Their injuries did not require medical attention.

Police say patrol officers witnessed the fight at St. Matthews Avenue and Maryland Street and placed the suspect under arrest.

Officers say they seized the hammer and a knife.

The suspect is facing multiple charges including robbery and assault with a weapon. She was detained in custody.
