Child in hospital after being bit by police dog during classroom visit

Winnipeg police say a child was taken to hospital after being bit by a police dog Wednesday morning.

WPS say the K9 unit was at Samuel Burland School for a classroom visit when the incident occurred.

“The child suffered an injury and was provided with medical care before being transported to a hospital as a precaution and for treatment,” said Winnipeg police in a statement.

“The involved canine is a single-purpose drug detection dog and not trained in aggression or apprehension.”

WPS says the dog has been removed from active duty for the time being and an investigation is underway.
