Portage la Prairie RCMP officer facing charges after woman hurt in custody: IIU

An RCMP officer in Portage la Prairie is facing charges after a woman was hurt reportedly while in police custody.

Manitoba’s police watchdog, the Independent Investigation Unit (IIU), says it began the investigation in July after investigators were alerted to the woman’s injuries.

The investigation determined “there are reasonable grounds to believe offences have occurred under the Criminal Code.”

The IIU adds the officer is facing assault and assault causing bodily harm charges.

Due to this, the RCMP officer has been issued a summons and will appear in court on Jan. 10, 2023, in Portage la Prairie.
