Record turnout for advance polling in Winnipeg – up 5% from last election

By News Staff

More Winnipeggers than ever have cast ballots in advance polling for next week’s municipal election.

The City of Winnipeg says 41,895 voters have voted in advance – up 5.1 per cent from 2018.

Advance polls were open in malls, hospitals, universities and other locations in the city as of Oct. 3.

“Every election, our goal is to streamline the process, reduce wait times, and improve service for people casting a ballot,” Marc Lemoine, a senior election official with the city, said in a statement. “We’re seeing the results of that initiative based on the record number of voters who took advantage of the convenient opportunities.

“We’re very pleased with all of the positive feedback we’ve received so far, and the fact that electors have turned out in record numbers ahead of Election Day means a lot to everyone involved.”

The 39,840 votes cast in advance four years ago was the city’s previous record.

Winnipeg votes for its new mayor on Wednesday. Polls are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
