The aftermath: What Fiona changed forever

By The Big Story

Almost two weeks after Hurricane Fiona hit Atlantic Canada, many communities are still picking up the pieces. In others, there are very few pieces to pick up — because homes and businesses are just gone. Thousands remain without power, and without the certainty of when or if they’ll return to their towns and villages.

Greg Mercer is the Atlantic Canada reporter at The Globe and Mail. He joins The Big Story to discuss all that he’s seen and heard while touring some of the regions hit hardest by the storm.

“This storm represents a real turning point in the history of a lot of these coastal communities,” he said, “the folks who are the most affected … they don’t want to come back and live on the edge of the water.”

As the scale of the destruction becomes clear, what does the rest of Canada need to know about what happened here? What’s being done to help those who have lost everything? And what might the future hold for these coastal communities, now that life on the coast seems more precarious than ever?
