Winnipeg man held at gunpoint, tied up in Bitcoin transaction gone wrong: WPS

Winnipeg police say a 19-year-old was held at gunpoint, assaulted, tied up and driven around by a suspect demanding money on Monday.

The Winnipeg Police Service says the incident – which took place around 5 p.m. – began as a pre-arranged Bitcoin transaction with someone from social media.

Police say after the victim was tied up and placed in a vehicle, he managed to escape and run for help when the vehicle stopped.

The 22-year-old suspect was identified by police and taken into custody on Broadway near Osborne Street N.

He is facing multiple charges, including armed robbery using a firearm, assault with a weapon, forcible confinement, and uttering threats to kill.

He was detained in custody.
