Winnipeg police say a man in his 20s is dead and two others are in unstable condition after a crash in the Elmwood neighbourhood Monday night.

Police say a vehicle with three occupants collided with another vehicle before crashing into a hydro pole.

The collision took place around 11:30 p.m. at Grey Street and Munroe Avenue.

The driver of that first vehicle – a 45-year-old man – and one of the passengers – a 32-year-old man – needed to be extracted. They were both hospitalized in unstable condition. The other passenger in that vehicle was in critical condition and died in hospital.

The lone occupant of the second vehicle was not injured. He was taken to hospital for precautionary reasons.

When general patrol officers responded to the serious collision, they allegedly found a sawed-off shotgun in the first vehicle.

The 45-year-old driver is facing several charges, including operating of a conveyance causing death while impaired to any degree by alcohol or drugs or a combination of both, and possession of a firearm.

He remains in hospital.

The 32-year-old passenger is also facing several gun-related charges. He was detained in custody.

None of the charges have been proven in court.
