Winnipeg police say a 70-year-old man remains in hospital with “life-altering” injuries more than one week after an alleged robbery and aggravated assault in the Garden City neighbourhood.
Police say a 34-year-old Winnipeg man was charged and detained in custody. Police believe the same suspect is connected to another breaking and entering on the same block, and the theft of a vehicle a day earlier.
Winnipeg police allege the aggravated assault took place Aug. 22 around 11:30 a.m.
Investigators believe the suspect forced his way into the victims’ home on Woodcrest Drive near Lincrest Road, “armed himself with a weapon” and assaulted the 70-year-old man.
A 64-year-old woman in the house fled to a neighbour’s home, and police were called from there.
Officers say they arrived to find the victim suffering from serious upper-body injuries. They say they provided emergency medical care before an ambulance took him to the hospital in unstable condition.
The suspect was arrested within the home, according to police.
Suspect broke into another home the night before: WPS
Investigators believe the same suspect broke into a separate home on Woodcrest Drive the previous night, around 8 p.m. Police say the suspect scared away a 64-year-old woman from her home, then robbed the place.
The suspect is believed to have stolen the victim’s car and fled before police arrived.
It is believed both incidents were random. As a result of the alleged crimes, the north district community support and foot patrol units increased their patrols of the area.
The accused is facing multiple charges, including breaking and entering, committing aggravated assault, theft over $5,000 and forcible confinement. He was detained in custody.
