Cannabis licensing program to start next week in Winnipeg

New rules are being put in place for Winnipeg cannabis growers next week.

Following an announcement from the municipality earlier this year, new rules which require cannabis growers to have a license will come into effect on Wednesday, Sept. 6.

Under the new licensing program, cannabis growing will be restricted within residential neighbourhoods, meaning those growing medical cannabis will have to operate in a designated production facility.

The city said in a statement, “The licence is required for anyone authorized by Health Canada to produce cannabis for medical use on behalf of a specific individual(s). It is not needed for anyone producing cannabis for their own personal medical use, or for commercial growers.”

The city has a checklist to assist applicants gather all documents needed before applying, and more information can be found on the City of Winnipeg website.
