Will Donald Trump be indicted? If he is, what happens next?

By The Big Story

In today’s Big Story podcast, last week it was revealed that former-president Donald Trump’s Florida property was searched by the FBI in an ongoing investigation related to classified documents — including some pertaining to nuclear weapons. Trump’s base and the Republican party have rallied around him, and there have been escalating threats of violence against the law enforcement agencies involved.

Aaron Rupar is an independent journalist who covers American national politics, and the author of the Public Notice newsletter. He joined us to break down what we do and don’t know about the seizure of documents from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, and discuss possibilities for how the investigation may progress.

“The fact that there was a raid, of sorts, conducted, overseen by an attorney general who has been very cautious, leads people to believe that there is more going on here than mundane mishandling of documents, that there are some real concerns about national security here,” he said. “Until we can read documents pertaining to the broader picture of the DOJ’s investigation, we just don’t know.”

So what happens now? How far are we from an indictment, if one ever comes? Could a former president actually find himself under arrest? And if it does happen, what mayhem will it spark in a country that feels like a political powder keg?
