Man in hospital following officer-involved shooting, IIU investigating

Manitoba’s police watchdog is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred in Winnipeg on Wednesday afternoon.

Winnipeg Police report the incident happened around 3 p.m. as officers responded to an incident involving a man with a firearm on Gertrude Avenue.

Officers say when they got to the location, they found a man outside a home holding a gun. In an attempt to de-escalate the situation, an officer fired a taser.

“The male subsequently pointed the firearm at officers at which time an officer discharged their service pistol. Officers were able to restrain the male and first aid was administered. The male was transported to Health Sciences Centre in unstable condition where he was later upgraded to stable,” said the The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) in a statement.

Anyone with any information on the shooting is asked to contact the IIU at 1-844-667-6060.
