New CCTV cameras to be installed around downtown Winnipeg

The Winnipeg Police are expanding the scope of their CCTV system downtown by removing 9 old cameras and adding 25 new ones. Some downtown residents were happy with the news, while a scholar says it’s the wrong choice.

Downtown Winnipeg will be getting some new CCTV cameras over the next few months.

Winnipeg police have been using Closed Circuit Television cameras since 2009. But as of right now, the city only has nine cameras.

A total of 25 new public-facing CCTV cameras will be installed in the downtown core to try and improve police investigations.

The new cameras are part of a multi-year safe strategy put in place by the city in 2018.
