Carjacking’s on track to be at new yearly high, WPS report

Winnipeg police have released detailed statistics on carjackings within the city.

Since 2013, Winnipeg has seen a steady increase in reported car thefts. 2021 saw an increase in reported carjackings compared to 2020, which saw a drop from 2019 likely due to the pandemic.

The start of 2022 is no exception, with 59 reported incidents from January to April.

Over the weekend three more attempted carjackings were reported.

Saturday near Grant Avenue and Wilton Avenue, WPS received reports of a woman who jumped from a moving vehicle and additional reports that her car had been stolen.

Police believe she was parked in the area of 1200 Grant Avenue when she was confronted by a 23 to 35-years-old man.

The woman was taken to hospital in stable condition and WPS later found the vehicle unoccupied along Carter Street.

The second incident happened early Sunday morning when a man and a woman reported that another man confronted them with a sawed-off .22 calibre rifle.

A struggle occurred and the pair were able to flee in their vehicle.

The third incident also occurred Sunday night.

Reports say a man in his 30s was sitting in a parking lot when he was approached by a woman asking for a smoke. Not long after the woman pulled out a knife and another man appeared with a gun.

The victim was robbed but was unharmed in the incident.

Police later found the vehicle unoccupied along Garry Street.

The stolen vehicle was later located unoccupied in the 100 block of Garry Street.
